And I know that askance look.

I really do think that the various 'gospels' in the scriptures really are different angles on or pieces of the same good news of what God is doing for whole the world through Israel (particularly its Messiah).

I think we evangelicals have gotten too narrowly technical and formulaic with the term "gospel" and need to be more practical with the concept of "good news", at least in the ways the scriptures are. For example, 'the gospels' (Matt., Mark, etc.) are properly named--everything in them is "good news" about Jesus--who he is & what he's up to. Any solid info about a leader with his kind of power (or much less) is "news." Just watch any newscast--almost anything about powerful people is news because who they are can, because of their power, affect many people, maybe even us and our families. The extent of Jesus' power makes every detail about him "news." It's what Jesus is doing with his power (especially in contrast to others) that makes the reports about him "good" news, really good.

It's not as narrow or complicated as I grew up hearing. The gospel(s) is (are) an announcement and even a story about power and the right to lead--who has it (Jesus) and what he's doing with it (healing/remaking the world)."T"https://www.blogger.com/profile/09410273278853015089noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6182378.post-18624565709163413112009-05-05T08:37:00.000-04:002009-05-05T08:37:00.000-04:00this is really great stuff T!!

BTW, our community's ...Jamie,

Thanks for coming by! BTW, our community's version of the steps is a little different (see side bar) but I thought it was worth posting Willard's version. N.T. Wright and the idea that 'the problem' is bigger than just the individual led us to change step 1 the way we did.

On being communal, I've heard that concern and even lived out some of its source. My first attempt to work the steps (after having only studied them) was by myself. I made it, predictably, to step 3. It was after I failed to make it through the steps that I appreciated AA's standard advice and practice to work the steps with a sponsor and with a group. (I had previously been very suspicious of the whole 'sponsor' thing.) In our community, we often say that being a disciple of Jesus who makes progress in that effort is too big a job for any of us, certainly any of us alone. It is, at a minimum, a two or three man job (with God) and often more.

Also, in terms of community (vs individualism), it is difficult to argue that AA's don't take a deeply communal approach to recovery, and even create some of the most authentic and healing communities in the world, including churches. The steps are only part of the picture of AA and similar groups, but even the steps are written in the plural and are walked out, if at all, by the "we", not just "I"s. "I"s can't and don't walk the path of the steps."T"https://www.blogger.com/profile/09410273278853015089noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6182378.post-1140467252089556422009-02-17T12:18:00.000-05:002009-02-17T12:18:00.000-05:00Great stuff. That element should always be there, but there needs to be an aspect that brings it into the communal. If you've read the book, Revovation of the Heart, the guide is like a curriculum to teach it. It has good exercises in each section to apply it to each of the parts of ones personality.

So, after the teaching on the chapter, there are exercises to apply that truth to your heart, soul, mind, strength (body) and realtionships (neighbor as self).

I hope this helps. John Wimber's teaching and example helped get me out of a state of intellectual pride after seminary.

If you haven't already, I would beg you to get your hands on anything by Bill Johnson and the church he leads in Redding, CA (www.ibethel.org). Many say of him that he carries the same DNA as Wimber. His message is the Kingdom of God, the members of his congregation are seeing so many miracles in their community that they have a full time staff member who is their "church historian" who does nothing but document the miracles (medical reports, etc.) taking place.

We've been listening and reading him for about a year and my wife and I personally are seeing more healings in the last year than all those combined in previous years--and I was raised in a Pentecostal church. We are seeing healings weekly now in the grocery store, parking lots, at a pool, in weekend services, etc.

I'd start with his book "When Heaven Invades Earth." Yes, this stuff really resonates with me.

Here's a resource or two that may help you along or to at least dialogue with: 1) Three is Enough Groups http://www.3isenough.org/ is Todd Hunter's dreamchild (he was the National Director for the Vineyard once Wimber died).

2. The Church of the Savior's (Gordon Cosby) mission groups. These groups were something like what we Protestants might liken to an “order” in the Catholic Church. They were ALWAYS led by “lay” people and supported, empowered, equipped and applauded by Gordon who was never threatened by another persons gifts or calling; they were focused on the what COS calls “journey inward” (spiritual transformation), “journey outward” (taking on the agenda of the Kingdom as it’s ambassador) and journey into community (where one could find a loving, safe, supportive place to discover calling, mission, gifts, roles, etc.).

Here is the idea in summary:

1. Non-pastors start groups—call them anything, be creative—that are focused on:

a. Forming a safe, supportive community with a focus: B & C below

b. Giving a vision for and resources for spiritual transformation

c. Going on a journey to discover what God wants done in their sphere of influence (calling or mission or purpose, etc.) and then using one’s gifts, talents or skills to be the cooperative friends of Jesus with reference to what has been discovered as agenda of the Kingdom.

Thanks T, look forward to more dialogue.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
